Do I Really Want An iPhone?

Posted on July 7, 2008 - Filed Under Random

There has been buzz in the Canadian news about the iPhone. Some positive. Some negative. Everyone knows that the phone is a cool device. And that it’s pretty. But it’s the price that everyone’s bickering about. Rogers has a monopoly on GSM technology in Canada, so they can charge whatever they want. Additionally, the volume of sales in Canada would be less than the size of Texas, so why should Apple care to pressure the provider?

So here’s the question. Do I really want one? I definitely wanted one when it first came out … but do I still want one now? To help me with my decision, I’ve decided to do what every confused person should do. Make a list.

Pros

  1. Coolness factor.
  2. Get to pretend to be a part of the “creative class” with the iPhone as my badge.
  3. They’re fun to play with when you’re bored. Or commuting.
  4. Being able to surf the web (easily & quickly) from anywhere is appealing.

Cons

  1. Hard to type on them
  2. An extra $30 a month on my cell phone bill = $350 a year. Plus the contract to be locked in with Rogers.
  3. I have no idea how much web I would consume. Without unlimited, I could rack up tons of extra charges.
  4. The iPhone was cool when it first came out. When it was scarce. Now everyone has one. There is something to be said about being different.

I’m still undecided. At least I have a couple more days to figure this out.

Update: Bell is providing the Samsung Instinct (an iPhone clone) with a $10 Unlimited Data plan. I could get all of the functionality and save myself $240 a year. Hrmm…. tempting.

    They’re awfully pretty.
But I’m always afraid that Apple will come out with some second or third generation ones that will have a bunch of fixes both functional and stylistic.
